Interdisciplinary Project: Coastal Dance at School

Recently, our Third Grade Science A class had the wonderful opportunity to perform a cultural dance in the history subject. This event not only allowed us to learn about our roots, but also to share them with our classmates in a vibrant and rhythmic way. We chose to present a coastal dance that highlighted some of the most representative Afro-Ecuadorian rhythms: the bomba caliente, prende la vela and checurrulao.

Rhythms that Tell Stories

Afro-Ecuadorian rhythms have a rich heritage dating back to colonial times, when the arrival of African slaves to Ecuadorian shores gave rise to a unique cultural fusion. The bomba caliente is one of these rhythms, originating in the Esmeraldas region. This dance, with its energetic and contagious movements, reflects the joy and resistance of the Afro-Ecuadorian people. Its music, which combines drums and marimbas, has become a symbol of cultural identity.

On the other hand, the rhythm of prende la vela is also fundamental in the Afro-Ecuadorian tradition. This dance is characterized by its fast and lively rhythm, which invites everyone to join in the celebration. The lyrics of its songs usually deal with themes of daily life and the struggle for freedom, which makes it a very significant form of cultural expression.

Finally, the checurrulao is a traditional rhythm that stands out for its sophisticated choreography and the use of indigenous instruments such as the marimba. This dance is common in festivities and ceremonies, and each step tells a story that honors Ecuador's African heritage.

Our Experience

During the weeks leading up to the event, we immersed ourselves in researching the history and importance of these rhythms. Not only did we learn about the dance technique, but we also discussed the cultural context surrounding them. Each rehearsal became a learning space, where in addition to dancing, we shared anecdotes and reflections on our roots.

On the day of the performance, the school auditorium was filled with energy. With our colorful costumes and radiant smiles, we put on a performance that celebrated Afro-Ecuadorian culture. The joy of the bomba caliente, the accelerated rhythm of prende la vela, and the elegance of the checurrulao made everyone present join in a single heartbeat, enjoying every step and every note.

Conclusion

This cultural dance was not only an assignment for the history course; it was a transformative experience that allowed us to connect with our roots and better understand the diversity that makes up our Ecuadorian identity. We learned that, through art and music, we can tell stories, celebrate life and honor our ancestors.

We thank our teachers and classmates for their support and enthusiasm. Without a doubt, this event will be remembered as a milestone in our educational journey, and an opportunity to continue exploring and celebrating the richness of our culture.
